The transition

Linux is in it’s puberty, and it requires recognition. So is Windows, it wants us to recognize that it too like any other teenager will tell you, is the center, the hub the very reason for the universes existence. Now we adults might not necessarily agree with all these self-indulging and fanatically fantastic self-loving statements, but one needs to give them adult attention, which quickly can go over into caressing of the hair or reading of a good story. But Linux is such an easy teenager. Comes home on time, the girlfriends are just lovely, and he calls home whenver he might be late for supper. With Windows itès an all other ball-game. With XP an easy way out would be to raise it’s allowance. But I digress.
So the allowance could be raised, But honestly I find that my Compaq laptop still should have a few good years in it without having to give more then it allready does. I bought it no more then two years ago and developed quite a few apps and pages on it, but now, it seems, with all the constant MS updates Windows XP was just getting slower and slower, asking more and more resources from the poor little bugger. And I was asking myself why on earth this was so. Did every update need to implement itself into my registry as any other second rate memory resistant Trojan, Spyware or Virus. So Three days I put my foot down, enough is enough, I want out. ‘Windows,’ I said, ‘it’s time we moved separate ways! I give you a simple choice, if you want to continue staying within my four laptop walls like this, you can either get a job and start paying rent, or if you want to continue living here for free I want you to go back to school and come home with nothing but top grades. Well Little to say but Windows refused. So I was quick to look for a replacement.
Now bare in mind that my laptop is the machine I use to read write and communicate. No development (except a little debugging now and then) no games, films, music or other things like that. So really I was looking for something to be my communicative hub. For development and other data-heavy tasks I have the big ugly Dell sitting in the corner.
Well I asked around and was assured that Ubuntu was the way for me to go. Ubuntu being a light-weight very powerful Linux Distribution that was user friendly and that I, as a somewhat savvy computer user, should have no problems understanding and installing. And all I can say, is…wow. Where have you been all my life. Such a well behaved teenager…!
more to come soon…
